If you are planning to visit Thames
Barrier Park and/or the Thames
Barrier then please note the
following important information:
Thames Barrier Park is located on
the NORTH bank of the river Thames
at Silvertown, London E16 and
provides an excellent environment
and view of the Thames Barrier
structure. The Thames Barrier
Information and Learning Centre is
located on the SOUTH bank of the
river Thames address above.
There is no direct access between
the two locations and there is no
public access to the Thames Barrier
structure itself from either
location as it spans the river.
Thames tidal defences the Thames
Barrier is a major part of the flood
defence system protecting London
against rising water levels and
tidal surges. The capital's defences
also include additional floodgates
at strategic points, like the
Barking Barrier, and raised river
embankments. The Thames
Barrier's unique structure spans the
520 metre-wide Woolwich reach and
consists of 10 separate movable
gates, each pivoting and supported
between concrete piers and abutments
which house the operating machinery.
When raised, the four main gates
each stand as high as a five-storey
building and as wide as the opening
of Tower Bridge. Each weighs 3700
tonnes.
